A wide range of human diseases (cancer, diabetes, arteriosclerosis) are accompanied by increased intracellular lipid droplet formation. In recent years, sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBPs) have shown that the expression of genes involved in lipid synthesis key, including encryption regulate fatty acid synthase, acetyl-CoA? 9 desaturase. It is proposed that SREBP isoforms function as a node allostatic processes that contribute to cellular lipid quality control. Therefore, their activity is tightly controlled with a variety of upstream (mTOR / AKT signaling pathways) and downstream (metabolites, such as saturated fatty acids, cholesterol) effectors. The Photography Scholarship project includes a number of kinds of yeasts, including Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Saccharomyces cereviseae Lipomyces starykei and to identify the underlying control the transcription of lipid metabolism and acyl lipid droplet formation. With a variety of stimuli, we are the transcription factors involved in the promotion of fat metabolism and acyl desaturation. It comes with a number of molecular biology techniques including Northern blot and microarray analysis to identify important regulatory proteins, and chromatin immunoprecipitation (Chip) identify regulatory elements in target genes. In addition, the genetic manipulation of yeast is relatively easy with the ability to decipher the functional components of these regulatory mechanisms and identify targets for drugs.

Detection of protein dynamics by confocal fluorescence microscopy only.

The ability to detect the fluorescence of a single fluorophore yielded great progress in understanding the heterogeneity and dynamics at the nanoscale in the life sciences and materials. The specific emission properties of fluorophores, such as its intensity, decay time, emission wavelength (spectrum) and the anisotropy can be used to change around the fluorophores in the probe. For example, changes in fluorescence decay as a powerful tool to deter and control the processes of energy transfer are used. A confocal microscope setup with several avalanche photodiode and a spectrometer (polychromator / CCD camera) that are used to monitor several parameters for the emission of each fluorophore is developed, a wealth of information. To extract as much information as possible, it is important to choose fluorophores with a high coefficient of absorption, strong fluorescence, photobleaching and low triplet quantum yield. They are organic fluorophores (with and without the presence of additives photo-stability, as RoxS) are tested and compared to a new class of clusters based money transmitters, proteins that determine their performance photo-stability. In test cases, we study the conformational changes that occur during fixation and substrate transport in homologous neurotransmitter transporter, people.

There will be one position for each of the research groups of the Department of Fundamental Physics: Subatomic physics, elementary particle theory, and mathematical physics.

Job description

The subatomic physics group is involved in performing and preparing major experiments at e.g. GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt and CERN in Geneva, where the student can expect to spend extended periods.

The elementary particle theory group is involved in theoretical studies of e.g. supersymmetry, related to upcoming experiments at the LHC accelerator at CERN.

The mathematical physics group investigates formal aspects of superstring theory and related theories with applications in e.g. particle physics, cosmology, and condensed matter physics.

The goal with a PhD-position is to develop general research proficiency and a high competence within your specific research area. As a PhD-student, you will primarily conduct research, often together with other researchers and PhD-students. You will also follow PhD courses, be involved in teaching activities, and participate in international conferences and networks.

You are expected to write a licenciate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years. The total time period for the position is limited to four years full time, or five years with 20% teaching load.

The candidate will realize an experimental setup for spatial intensity and phase modulation of light beams aimed to obtain focusing in ordered or disordered nanostructures [1]. The degree of focusing will be studied for different kind of nanostructures (like photonic crystals [2] and photonic glass [3]) and for nonlinear systems. Job will include the developing of a genetic optimization algorithm, and time resolved measurements.

Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher PhD studentship PhD studentship in study looking at Neuroendocrine influences on Immunesenescence

This study aims to investigate the mechanisms that impact on TEC development and function in the context of aged-related thymus atrophy. Specific aims are:
1. To determine expression patterns of neuroendocrine molecules in the thymus on defined TEC subsets, including cortical and medullary epithelium, and bipotent TEC progenitors recently identified in our own studies
2. To employ our in vitro and in vitro models of thymus function (3) to directly determine the functional capacity of thymic epithelial cells in the embryonic, steady-state and aged thymus.
3. To determine whether reversal of thymus atrophy through manipulation of the neuroendocrine axis involves thymus regeneration from a pool of bipotent TEC progenitors.

The project is funded for 3 years as part of a European Training Network. There are 14 projects across 7 different European countries. The students recruited will attend annual workshops in the different countries and attend two training workshops during their 3 years.
The thymus is unique in its capacity to process bone marrow derived progenitors into CD4+ helper and CD8+ cytotoxic T-cells that are essential components of adaptive immune responses. The thymus undergoes a dramatic age-related atrophy so that by 40-50 years of age in man, the thymus retains less than 10% of its maximal capacity, drastically reducing output of new T cells. These dramatic changes in thymic function and new T-cell production mean that the aged immune system displays a diminished ability to mount effective immune responses to new pathogens, including vaccines. So, strategies aimed at reversing thymus atrophy are attractive in the context of reboosting the immune system to improve vaccination success in the elderly, and in improving T-cell reconstitution following bone marrow transplantation. Importantly, thymic atrophy has been linked to a decline in the frequency of cortical and medullary thymic epithelial cells (TEC) that provide many of the signals required for T-cell development. The mechanisms responsible for a decline in TEC are not known. However, several lines of evidence point towards involvement of a neuroendocrine axis in TEC biology. For example, LHRH antagonists have been shown to reverse thymic atrophy by acting on TEC. In addition, recent studies link expression of the adipokine Ghrelin, to aged-related thymus atrophy (1). About Corky:

The 1995 De Gelleke Award, CISCA’s highest honor, was awarded posthumously to H.F. “Corky” Falbaum at the annual convention in Nashville, TN. His wife, Marie, and son, Rand, accepted the award. The award is named for Gerry De Gelleke, a driving force in the early days of the Association, and is awarded to an individual whose contributions to the industry and the Association have been acknowledged as significant and noteworthy.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Corky attended Tulane University, and in 1947 was voted outstanding freshman by his class. He continued his participation in the university activities and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. After graduating in 1951 with a degree in sociology, he did post-graduate work in architecture while employed by the Celotex Corporation as a junior salesman and New Orleans plant guide. He subsequently went to work for a Celotex franchisee with sub-contracting offices in New Orleans, Little Rock, Jackson and Memphis.

In 1953, he opened an acoustics and specialties office in North Louisiana. Five years later, he took the leap into self-employment as a manufacturers’ representative, selling a variety of commercial ceiling products in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas, and parts of Tennessee. One of the companies he represented was K.E. Gordon, founded in 1964. It was to become the work he enjoyed most, a time in which many CISCA members became his customer.

In 1976, Corky acquired ownership of the ceiling grid lines from K.E. Gordon. Corky and his wife, Marie, along with 5 employees, started the company that is known today as Gordon, Inc.

His son, Rand, joined the family business in 1984. At that time, the manufacturing plant consisted of 50,000 square feet. Gordon employed 65 people and expanded its product line to include aluminum wall trims.

Corky’s legacy lives on today. Gordon, Inc. continues to expand, and is honored as a Specialty Industry Leader in the design and supply of Specialty Architectural Products. Today, Gordon operates in a 226,000 square foot facility, employing 115 people. Gordon continues to sell worldwide with many Independent Manufacturers’ Representatives in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. Gordon, Inc. operates on a set of Core Values, Beliefs, and Principles that guides Individual and Team behavior, as well as the overall Business Strategies of the Company.

Through attendance at more than 30 CISCA conventions, Corky Falbaum significantly broadened his circle of friends in this industry. At the 1985 CISCA Convention in Colorado Springs, he was invited to serve as the first member of the CISCA Board to represent specialty manufacturers. His membership recruiting efforts were on-going and tireless, and his appreciation of the CISCA organization was genuine.

With regard to his religious and civic involvement, Corky served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of his Methodist church, on the Chamber of Commerce Board, and on the Advisory Board of Holy Angels, a residential and training campus for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His daughter, Robin, continues to reside there today.

Corky Falbaum passed away June 5, 1993, at his beloved vacation home in Eden Isle, Arkansas. He was 63 at the time of his death.

Corky is remembered as energetic, generous, thoughtful and kind; a loving husband, father and grandfather. His interest in and devotion to people, along with a diverse business, religious and civic involvement made him a true Renaissance man. His simple, direct and caring ways earned the respect of all who knew him.

We honor the legacy of H.F. “Corky” Falbaum and his commitment to the CISCA organization. E8 Masters Level Scholarships in Sustainable Energy Development

The purpose of the e8 scholarship is to support outstanding students pursuing advanced studies in sustainable energy development and to encourage meaningful contributions to the collective body of knowledge about this subject.

The e8 considers an outstanding student to be one

who graduates with excellent grades in the top 20% of her/his class
who is determined to advance her/his knowledge and understanding
who has a history of community involvement
who is committed to sustainable energy
who is committed to return and contribute to her/his home country

Who is eligible?
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must

plan to undertake studies at the Masters level or Post-Doctoral level in areas directly related to sustainable energy development
be citizens of the developing countries and territories identified for OECD official development aid in the DAC List of ODA Recipients effective as of 2006

What are the levels of financial assistance and the duration of the scholarships?
Scholarships of US$ 23,000 per year for up to two years are offered for Masters level students. Scholarships of US$ 30,000 per year for up to two years are offered for Post-Doctoral students. Up to two Post-Doc and ten Masters scholarships will be awarded annually.

How do I submit my application package?

Although applicants are under no oglibation to do so, it is preferable to transmit application packages by EMAIL. As the volume of incoming e-mailed applications is extremely heavy around the deadline, we strongly urge you to submit your file as early as possible. To facilitate processing, please label your attachments as follows:

What will I need for my application?
All applicants must provide:

a) application form fully completed;

b) curriculum vitæ;

c) applicant statement

Masters Applicants
Please attach the form “Applicant’s Statement form – Masters Degree”provided for this purpose. The form may be downloaded from www.e8.org scholarship section.

d) copies of transcripts for degrees and final grades

Masters Applicants
• Bachelors transcripts

e) letter of acceptance from an approved academic institution to undertake studies in sustainable energy development;

• if your admission is pending, please include evidence that you have applied for admission;
• if your admission has been deferred, please included the university deferral confirmation;
• If this application is for the second year of a two-year programme, please include a certificate of enrolment and your results for the first year.

f) academic reference

Masters Applicants
Please attach the form ”Masters Academic Reference” provided for this purpose. The form may be downloaded from www.e8.org scholarship section.

g) personal reference, in letter form, must be dated and come from a person (not family member) who can discuss other personal qualities or interest that make you specially qualified to receive the scholarship.

h) proof of citizenship. Refer to the eligibility section above for country eligibility

• abstract;
• principle objectives;
• background information (broader research or other activities of which the research would be a part);
• data sources;
• methodology or approach;
• expected results;
• significance or application of results to sustainable energy development.

If you have not yet formulated a plan of research, your statement should include:
• abstract;
• description of two or three research questions related to sustainable energy development and any link to your previous research;
• analysis of how you think these questions may best be answered;
• description of your methodology and data sources

Key Dates
Applications for the Masters programme must be received by March 19, 2010.

How are applications judged?
An Academic Panel consisting of accomplished representatives from Europe, North America and Japan will review the applications. All selections are final and all applicants will be notified.

How will I receive the funds?
Awards will be directly deposited (in US$) into the accounts of the Institution where you are enrolled and provided to you on a regular basis as long as you are making satisfactory progress toward achieving your academic or research requirements.

What are my obligations to the e8 if I am selected?
You are expected to complete your degree or your research, update e8 about your progress and publish your results. You are required to acknowledge the e8 support when publishing or making presentations on your research and results. We may ask you to present your results at an e8 function, in which case your out of pocket expenses incurred to make the presentation will be covered by the e8.
